In Praise of The Book

Home Opening Remarks Calling the PPV Hands Down

I just got done watching something I found very entertaining. I didn't think it would be. At best, I thought it would be like a train wreck, I'd be unable to turn away. After it was over, I sat back and said to myself, "Was that really a Booker T match?"

That's right, I was impressed by a Booker T match. I didn't think it could happen either. When Booker was in WCW, he was interesting to watch, but ever since he got to WWF, I pictured him as an upper mid-carder at best. Tonight he proved me wrong by going the distance with the Rattlesnake himself, Stone Cold Steve Austin. It was a well executed, well thought out match. Booker focused on the injured knee of Stone Cold throughout the match. At one point I thought he had screwed up and was working the wrong knee, but as quickly as I started chanting "You Screwed Up" in my head (like I'd chant something at the TV), he switched back to the correct knee. By God, he even used that asinine Spinaroonie move in a logical manner. He was on his back after an axe kick to the back of Stone Cold's head, and he used the Spinarrone to get back to his feet. The match was for a chance at Chris Jericho and his Undisputed title at No Way Out, so Booker came out like he had a purpose. He wasn't spouting "Sucka's" and staring at his hand every 5 seconds. He acted like a man on a mission. As well he should. He acted like a purpose because he did have a purpose. I started to like the Book again.

Don't get me wrong, I've always liked Booker T. It was just lately I didn't like his in ring product. Either he was getting his butt kicked by no name chumps, or he was made to look incompetent in the ring, and that translated to me not caring abot his character out of the ring. One of the things I've realized recently is that the quality of work in the ring directly affects my interest in the person out of the ring. Does anyone really care why Albert became the Hip Hop Hippo? No. Why? Because he doesn't wrestle particualrly well. He's all power and no psychology. I like Billy and Chuckie out of the ring not because they've got a funny gimmick, but because together, they can put on a good show in the ring. That point may be arguable, but if you look past Billy's past performances and take a fresh look at him in the ring, you realize that he's a great supporting tag partner for someone with some ring skill.

I mean honestly, does it matter to you if the Big Show is happy or angry? His gimmick of stealing other people's gimmicks would have worked better if he could have done more than head butt and chokeslam his opponent in the ring. Steven Richards could back it up in the ring and his "steal the gimmick" schtick worked for me.

Jericho's a heel now. People care because he's a good wrestler. The Undertaker got a new lease on life when he went all "American Bad Ass" on us. He wrestled like he wanted to be there, and I cared that people were wrecking his bike and stalking his wife. Now he's gone back to being the lazy, no-selling dead man Undertaker and I could care less that he "wants respect" out of the ring.

So welcome back Booker T. I've been waiting for you to show up in the ring. Now I can care about you out of the ring. Suckah!
