I'm back. Back from back-to-back-to-back trips that really made my get up and go...um...get up and go. This last trip was back to Tallahassee for Homecoming. We lost. I know. I was there. A lot of things came to an end when the clock read all zeros. FSU's undefeated home ACC winning streak. The chance to have another in a long string of ten win seasons. A chance at a top 5 finish. A realistic chance at a top-tier BCS bowl (if you can call the Orange bowl Top-Tier). And possibly most significantly, Bobby's 25 game streak of homecoming wins. I guess the thing that caught my eye most when I was reading the local newspaper over breakfast on Sunday morning were the comments of the coach of the Wolfpack. A former FSU assistant coach by the name of Chuck Amato. He said, "I'm still undefeated in homecoming games here in this stadium." I found that very...interesting. I haven't checked the stats, but can he say that about his own stadium? How many ten win seasons does he have with his own team? When was the last time he had at least a share of the ACC crown? Does he even have a chance at a share of it this year? They came into the Seminole's stadium and beat them there. They were the first team to beat the Seminoles twice and the first ACC team to do it in Doak Campbell Stadium. None of this is disputed. No one can argue those facts. What is disputable is the future. After this football season is over, people will start to worry about making schedules for however many years down the road they are up to now. Is it five? I don't know. I do know, however, that when it comes time to make those schedules and there's a mark on the sheet to indicate homecoming, coaches and athletic directors and whoever else is responsible for these sorts of decisions will all look around at each other and, quite possibly, ask each other "What is N.C. State doing on that date?" My point is, next year, and the year after that, and the year after that, for a long long time, Coach Amato, the team you left will be in the hunt for a National Championship and the team you are coaching will be someone else's Homecoming game. If you feel so confident about your team and you're willing to put a streak on the line, Coach Amato, why don't you talk the powers that be into scheduling F.S.U. for Homecoming one year. Gasucawa |
